Second Chances

CRAFTING SUSTAINABLE TRANSITIONS THROUGH SECOND CHANCES

The project created for Danish menswear brand NN.O7 consists of a recare book and a system design for a recare community.

Having as a starting point the increase of garment’s longevity during the use phase, the project focuses on how and which repair strategies align with the values and aesthetics of the brand while considering the needs of the main consumer. The aim is to inspire the consumer to have a more responsible consumption culture, while exploring how NN.O7 can facilitate change towards responsible consumption.

Recare book – Second Chances
The Recare book serves as a comprehensive guide for men seeking to breathe new life into their broken, worn-out, or unused clothing. While primarily designed for a network of tailors who can use the book as a reference, it is also suitable for men interested in DIY repairs. Each page features a sample of how garments can be repaired, accompanied by detailed information on composition, craft, tools, application, and difficulty level. The samples are organised into three levels of difficulty: basic, intermediate, and complex, with aesthetics that progress from basic repairs to full pattern customisation. The cover is crafted from NN.O7 sample material, and we propose making the book available both online and in stores.
Website
The new website tabs allow customers to request repairs, explore available tailors and stores, and find inspiration through the book and recare community pages.

Recare Community
The community will be featured on the NN.O7 website as a dedicated space for knowledge sharing among members, offering discussion forums, tutorials, and inspiration.
Repair strategy
Repair stands as an ethical and environmentally conscious solution, contributing positively to production by mitigating the depletion of energy, raw materials, and water. As an artisanal practice, it serves as a proactive response to the prevalent throwaway culture, offering a transformative opportunity to reconsider our connection with everyday items. While the initial manufacturing process cannot be reversed, repair ensures that valuable resources are not wasted, embodying a sustainable approach. Furthermore, repair presents a non-extractive method, utilising materials readily available in people’s immediate surroundings. This not only fosters resourcefulness but also aligns with a more responsible and eco-friendly lifestyle.

Facilitating Recare
The three elements proposed – the book, the online community and the tailors network – initiate the transition towards a new system. Together, they create the conditions for the implementation of repair services and the creation of a movement to extend garment longevity.
Repair samples
Using NN.O7 sample fabric, over sixty samples were created to explore which visible mending techniques could fit the values and aesthetics of the brand while considering the needs of the main NN.07 customer. These samples were categorised into three levels of complexity, ranging from minor repairs to complete customisation.
Recare card
Customers can track their repairs and receive one repair for free.
